FAQ

Savvy aircraft owners know aircraft ownership represents a large capital investment. In many cases, it may be an individual’s largest, as today, most newly built single engine airplanes exceed the median cost of a home in the US. Just like an appliance upgrade in a kitchen is part of home ownership, we also upgrade our aircraft with the latest avionics, safety or performance features. Yet we wouldn’t undertake a kitchen remodel without ensuring the roof on our house protects the investment.

Likewise, a hangar protects your aircraft investment, eliminating the devaluing effects of outdoor storage. Hangars protect aircraft from paint fading and window crazing from UV light, intense summer heat on delicate avionics, and water damage due to rain, all of which can affect resale by thousands of dollars.

When you fill out your hangar inquiry form, select the radio button on the tick box you’re interested in semi-private hangar space, and indicate your Make/Model of your aircraft type in the provided area. For instance, if you indicate you own a Cirrus SR-22T, we’ll match you up with others who share the same (or similar) aircraft type.

No, subleasing is not permitted. All aircraft on Skyway Center’s campus must be direct lessees of Skyway Center.
Yes, with certain restrictions. The substitute aircraft must be 100% under the control of the lessee, and a simple lease amendment is required to designate it as a temporary, substitute aircraft. Note: A rate difference may apply in community or shared hangars if the substitute aircraft is larger than the lessee’s original aircraft.

Skyway Center is designed as a private hangar complex for the benefit of its members and their guests only. While some aviation businesses may be complementary to the Skyway member experience, others may not be appropriate due to operating restrictions at San Carlos. For example, businesses and aircraft listed as, or operating under 14 CFR Part 119, 121, 125, or 135 are not permitted at Skyway Center by covenant. If your business is interested in relocating to Skyway Center, give us a call.

For Private or Semi-Private Hangars, the total square footage of the hangar, as opposed to the aircraft’s hangar index is used to establish the base rental index. For example, hangars Evelyn or Desiree each fit one aircraft only; however, the lessee has full use of the 2,420 square footage of the deck space of the hangar.

Skyway Center uses the industry-standard method of calculating an aircraft’s hangar index for its Community Hangars, which is the length of the aircraft rounded up (not down) to the nearest whole number, multiplied by the wingspan [or rotor arc] rounded up (not down) to the nearest whole number.

For example, a Cirrus SR-22 is exactly 26’ long and has a 38’ 4” wingspan. Hence, 26’ x 39’ is the aircraft’s hangar index, or 1,014’ square feet. And while yes, the rules of mathematics would ordinarily round down to the nearest whole number, we know you’re going to want that extra 4” of wingspan for takeoff.

The aircraft hangar index is used to establish predictable and fair hangar rental rates for all lessees of our Community Hangar space. It is not a guarantee of a given square footage leased, in the way a Private or Semi-Private Hangar is for the exclusive use of those Skyway Center members. By definition, Community Hangar space is non-exclusive, and shared. Thusly, in order to provide the greatest hangar deck space available to the market, safely accommodate as many aircraft owners as possible, and offer the most competitive rates for a premium hangar offering, the aircraft hangar index is a formula used to create a monthly base rental fee.

Private or Semi-Private Hangar members of Skyway Center are the only members of Skyway Center with exclusive-use hangars, allowing them to select our upgraded finish package, customizing their hangars to be nothing less than a showroom for their aircraft. Each hangar is pre-plumbed for its own restroom, and vehicle (car) storage is permitted with your aircraft. Note: If selecting the upgraded finish package, the hangar comes with its own restroom.

In addition, Private or Semi-Private Hangar members of Skyway Center have full access to the non-exclusive areas of the campus, including parking lots, aircraft aprons and, as well as other common areas such as the lobby/reception area, restrooms, and coffee/snack areas. Discounts on fee-based amenities, such as conference facilities are also available.

Community Hangar members of Skyway Center receive our “aircraft valet” service, in which your aircraft is positioned for you outside the hangar prior to departure and returned to the hangar after your return.
